Amazon Are Now Pushing Products Based On The Weather

You read that right! Amazon are now using local temperature and precipitation data to serve its customers with targeted adverts that will suggest products suitable for the current weather conditions.

Highlighted as part of the website’s autumn hub, the retail giant has announced it will tailor your adverts to your location. If it’s sunny, you’ll see more suncream ads; if it’s raining, there’ll be cheap umbrellas for sale everywhere.

“The store will display products from suncream to flip-flops to sunglasses, to help customers get the products they need to enjoy the summer heat,” the site states. “As all Brits know, our weather doesn’t always deliver great weather; so when the temperature drops and the clouds arrive, Amazon will offer customers rain-proof products such as umbrellas, anoraks and wellington boots.”

Although this may come as a surprise to some, it’s perhaps more surprising that Amazon hasn’t been doing this already. The new update will take city-specific weather information and seamlessly integrate this data into the website you see when you click through.

A nifty idea, this change is surely trying to ride the crest of a traditional British wave - we are obsessed with the start and end of seasons and, perhaps more importantly, the change in weather this can bring.

Amazon has already made further changes behind the scenes. According to sales data from 2013 through to 2016, the British population love summer and actually start to get into the swing of things earlier than you might expect - we generally buy summer-related products on the first Sunday of June, with a 380% sales spike on that specific day over those three years.

It may be slightly foolish to begin labelling our seasons based on sales data, but Amazon has already tapped into the data to boost its own sales further. This amendment to weather-related adverts has been widely accepted as ‘nothing new’, so expect to see plenty of umbrella adverts on the UK site.
