The top ten ways to get in the Christmas spirit.

Each year the festive period seems to roll around more and more quickly, it often only seems like last week that we celebrated Christmas, and now we're getting ready to do it all over again! For most of us, getting into the spirit of Christmas is easy, but for a few, a little more encouragement is needed. So here are our ten top tips to make sure you get into the Christmas spirit this season:

1) Find the perfect tree

Phase 1 is to find the perfect christmas tree. Whether it is real or fake, having a tree decorated with lights and tinsel is a great place to start. Heading to the local Christmas tree farm where you can choose and even cut down your own tree also provides a great day out for the family. You’d have to be a serious scrooge to not catch the Christmas spirit surrounded by hundreds of Christmas trees!

2) Have an evening of hot chocolate and decorating the tree

Make decorating the Christmas tree a special evening in. Take the time to remember where your beloved christmas ornaments came from and what makes them special. Put on some christmas music, grab a hot chocolate and make an evening out of it. It's not everyday you get to add festive ornaments onto a tree now, is it?!

3) Countdown to Christmas Day

Counting down to the big day is a great way to create excitement for the holiday season and your favourite christmas traditions. Advent calendars are the perfect way to get everyone in the spirit and besides you're never too old for an advent calendar.

4) Get crafty

Gather the kids round and get them involved in making handmade gifts, tree ornaments or house decorations. Paper chains, snowflakes, baubles, ginger bread houses, the list is endless… just make sure you bring lots of glitter, as nothing says Christmas like glitter!

If you head out for a little winter forage you can even create your own Christmas wreathes; don't forget to bring your brolly though, as the Great British weather is very temperamental!

5) Playing Christmas songs

Tune into a Christmas radio station and let the spirit fill your house and car with festive tunes. It’s pretty impossible to not be in a Christmassy mood while singing along to these. Let all the old songs that you love to hear fill your homes and enjoy every second.

6) Have a Christmas movie night

Pop some popcorn and grab a hot chocolate, to snuggle up for a night in with Christmas movies; whether you’re a fan of ‘Elf’ or perhaps something a bit more classic, such as ‘White Christmas’, there is a festive movie out there for everyone!

7) Making Christmas ornaments

Creating a new ornament each year can become a great christmas tradition. Kids will get excited when they see their handmade decorations from past years hanging on the tree. Making your own christmas ornaments is a great way to show your holiday spirit and also makes an excellent low budget idea for personalised christmas gifts.

8) Visit Santa Claus

Nothing says Christmas is coming like the arrival of Santa in your local town. Take a break from the hectic shops and let your kids visit Santa to tell him exactly what they want this year. Whether it is full of tears or cheers, this holiday photo opportunity makes great memories for many years to come.

9) Drive around to see the Christmas lights

There is always one street in your neighbourhood that likes to go all out with their Christmas decorations, with hundreds of flashing lights and inflatable singing Santas. Wrap up warm and have a wander to see what amazing displays you can find in your town to help you get in on that festive feeling!

10) Give back to others

For some, the holidays can be a tough time. There are lots of us that are less fortunate and miss out on holiday gifts, a hot turkey dinner or a family game of charades. It’s important to tell younger members of the family what the true meaning of giving is and also how you can help a family in need. Perhaps create a Christmas hamper for a family in your community or contact your local food bank or shelter for other great ideas on how you and your family can give back this year.

We hope these top tips will get you on your way to feeling in the Christmas spirit.

Finally, have a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Jolly Brolly!
