How To Use Your Umbrella Safely

You might read the title of this blog post and think we’re joking - but we’re not. Worldwide umbrella-related injuries total over 2,000 per year!

With that in mind, we thought we’d create this handy guide on the best ways to use your umbrella safely whilst avoiding an injury to you and to others.

The first and most important step is to choose your umbrella wisely. Investing in an expensive umbrella may sound like a good idea, but chances are you’ll end up misplacing it or damaging it in some way. With that in mind, why not choose a cheaper umbrella that still suits your needs (check out our fantastic range of discount umbrellas here!).

There’s little sense in carrying around an umbrella worth hundreds of pounds for you to either lose it or break it, so a cheap umbrella is definitely more cost-effective.

Step number two is to open the umbrella, but in a safe place. This means outside - especially if you are superstitious - and in plenty of space with no-one around you. Also ensure you hear or at least feel your umbrella click into place after sliding it open. Under no circumstance should you open your umbrella towards someone else as this can be dangerous if done carelessly.

Next we have positioning. Ideally, your umbrella should be shielding the upper part of your body rather than your lower half. This means that while your head and shoulders will stay dry, be prepared to sacrifice your legs and shoes to the elements.

Of course this is much easier said than done on windy days where rain can travel at an angle or even horizontally, so just do your best!

The final point to mention is another important one regarding safety and that relates to other people - this is the biggest reason behind this article! Unfortunately, despite this being a fairly obvious step, this is not at all obvious to some umbrella owners out there.

If you come across someone else walking down the road next to you, try to clearly raise or lower your brolly so that the metal spokes of your umbrella frame don’t spear the eyes of the other person - simple!

These fairly obvious steps can sometimes get lost in our busy world where people are concentrating on other things like the contents of their bags or their smartphones. Just bear in mind that umbrellas are here to make our lives more comfortable, but it’s important to use them correctly and safely!
